“I have two kinds of problems, the urgent and the important. The urgent are not important, and the important are never urgent." - Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th US President
I don’t know about you but this time of year I feel like there is a lot going on. It’s back to school time for children and college students and maybe continuing education adults, a time to get your home and garden ready for the winter and the beginning of a series of exciting holidays.
If you don’t already a great daily habit is to look at your calendar, and planner for a few minutes every day. This is a great way to stay on top of things and not miss any important dates, holidays or events. But also gets you into the habit of seeing what’s coming and preparing rather than getting caught off guard.
I have always made to do list, but sometimes I struggle with organizing them or having too many without structure. The Eisenhower matrix is a great way to organize all of your to dos. The Eisenhower matrix is a Task management tool and decision making tool that divides your task into four areas. It defines tasks into urgent, not urgent, important and not important. It is also called the Urgent-Important Matrix in the popular book 7 habits of highly effective people by Stephen Covey.
How To
You can take a blank 8 x 10 sheet of paper and divide it into four squares. Each square has a title. The four titles are Do, Schedule, Delegate and Delete.
Do tasks will be under the urgent column and important row. Do tasks have deadlines and possibly significant consequences. They demand your attention. These would be considered the task that you would do first and need to be done and are time sensitive. Do these tasks first.
Schedule tasks are also in the important row, but are not as urgent as Do tasks. So they will go into the not urgent column. These tasks don’t necessarily have deadlines but are important to be accomplished. these are also tasks that may contribute to your long-term mission, values, and goals in life. Schedule these tasks to do later.
Delegate tasks will go the not important row. This tasks aren’t necessarily not important per se, but they’re just not as important as the do and schedule tasks. Like the Do tasks, Delegate tasks will go in the Urgent column. These tasks need to be done, but these are things that you can delegate to someone else and don’t need your expertise. Assign these to dos to others.
Finally in the fourth box is Delete tasks. Delete tasks are labeled both not urgent and not important. These are tasks that you want to do but are really distracting you from priorities. And they don’t necessarily have any measurable value. Make a decision to delete these tasks from your to do list.

Mabon, a pagan holiday and one of the eight Wiccan Saabats, is an ancient harvest festival and nature based spiritual tradition celebrated around the autumnal equinox. It is a time to express gratitude, to asses personal and spiritual growth and to prepare for winter. The fall equinox fell on September 22 this year. It is the astronomical day of the year that the amount of daylight sun is almost equal to that of nighttime darkness.
Pagan derives from the latin word meaning “country person.” The original pagans were followers of an ancient religion that worshiped several gods and goddesses otherwise known as a polytheistic religion. This included Wiccan, Druidry and Heathenry where the Norse gods, Celtic and Greek gods and goddesses were worshipped. They believed that nature and the natural cycles of birth, growth and death were sacred. And what was observed in the world around us carry spiritual meanings. They believed human beings were part of nature just like animals, trees, stones, plants and everything else on the earth. Pagans prayed to old gods, dieties, classical pantheons, nature spirits, or their own higher daemon.
Christians often refer to paganism as religions that do not worship the God of Abraham with origins in pre-Christian Germanic settled places. Paganism began to be referred to not just European earth religions but indigenous religions from around the world. The word “pagan” has often been used in a derogatory manner by Christians. Today the word is often described as someone who does not attend a synagogue, church or mosque.
+BIRTH+
Did you know that celebrating your birthday or the date of your birth comes from a pagan tradition? The tradition actually goes back for centuries but wasn’t popularized until recently.
Pagans believed that evil spirits with malicious intentions lurked around days of change, like the day you are getting older. The tradition of blowing out candles actually was an attempt to ward off evil spirits, and wishes and prayers would be carried to the gods. Celebrating birthdays was not always popular amongst Christians because it was linked to paganism. Even today some Christians believe birthday celebrations displease their god.
Birthdays have evolved to be a time honored tradition that brings us joy, connection and a sense of accomplishment. Psychologists believe celebrating birthdays “taps into some fundamental aspects of human psychology.” We associate birthday with happiness, love and appreciation. We are showered with attention, gifts, and affection from our family and friends. As we grow older birthdays take on new meanings like the reminder of our mortality, the preciousness of time, and a mark of our journey in life.
On your birthday don’t forget to “savor the celebration and all the happiness it brings.”
Your birth was your beginning
Celebration is an expression of thanks
It’s an opportunity to refresh your outlook
It opens the door for new mercies
It is a chance to acknowledge your existence
It’s a great opportunity to bond with people
